Members of the Dockworkers Union (DWU) have issued a strike notice to KPA over government delay in implementing a two year Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) concluded several months ago.

KPA unionisable members affiliated to the DWU under the stewardship of General Secretary Simon Sang announced in a press statement signed by Sang.

Sang declared that they intend to go on strike by end of the holy month of Ramadhan.

“We have written of our intention to call for a strike to the authority’s Managing Director Captain William Ruto over failure to honor a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) agreement which was concluded several months ago,” he said.

Sang confirmed a total of 4,500 workers will down their tools by end of this month.

In the statement issued at Lotus Hotel in Mombasa county the DWU General Secretary warned the government to stop taking their being peaceful for granted.

The DWU General Secretary said in his statement shared with the media that unless the government fulfills their CBA agreement the mother of all strikes will take place.

He told the media that their intention to strike follows the government refusal to implement the agreement.

“The planned strike will be worse than that of 2016. We have been patient but we have now resolved to ask out members to down their tools after all avenues for dialogue were exhausted,” he pointed out.

The DWU General Secretary said they won’t hesitate to go back to the 2016 incident adding that the government understands what they can do.

Sang said the government has been left with an option to meet their demand before end of this month.

He insisted that after Muslims end marking the fasting in the month of Ramadhan it won’t be business as usual at all port facilities within the entire country.
