A tragic shooting incident involving officers from the Kenya Police Service (KPS) and the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has left two officers dead,one officer and a civilian seriously injured in Kinango SubCounty.
The incident occurred today in the afternoon along the Nyango–Kilibasi Road and reported at Vigurungani Police Station.
According to police reports, two Police officers based at Kilibasi Police Post all Constables were riding a motorcycle when they encountered two KWS rangers from Kilibasi KWS Camp who were also on patrol using a motorcycle.
The officers had stopped a motorcycle transporting charcoal, ridden by Salim Mwandoro for routine questioning.
During the interaction, a disagreement arose after one of the officers questioned a Ranger about two goats allegedly given to him by a rancher during the festive season for the police officers’ goats that were never delivered.
Police say the confrontation escalated rapidly, with the Ranger reportedly becoming agitated and opening fire using his rifle.
The police officer was shot multiple times in the chest and died at the scene.
The other police Constable sustained a gunshot wound to the ribs and was rushed to Voi Hospital in critical condition.
During the incident,the charcoal motorcycle rider was also shot in the ribs and taken to Mariakani Hospital for treatment.
Moments later,the Ranger is reported to have turned the weapon on himself, shooting under the chin and dying at the scene.
Senior security officers from Kinango, including the SubCounty Police Commander (SCPC), OCs from Vigurungani and Macknon Road, and DCI officers from Kinango and Taru, responded to the incident and processed the scene.
Two assault rifles, multiple magazines, and more than 130 rounds of ammunition were recovered.
The bodies of the deceased officers were moved to Voi SubCounty Hospital Mortuary pending post mortem examination.
