A parked matatu was on Tuesday morning completely destroyed by fire just outside the Luanda Police Station gate in Vihiga County.
The incident occurred at around at around 11.00 a.m.
It involved a Toyota Hiace matatu registration number KCH 256S.
According to police reports, the fire originated from a heap of garbage that had been burnt by unknown persons while awaiting collection by the county government.
The flames spread rapidly, reaching the matatu that had been parked near the station gate, engulfing it within minutes and reducing it to a shell.
Police officers attached to Luanda Police Station, with the assistance of members of the public, managed to put out the fire before it spread further.
However, the vehicle had already suffered total damage.
No injuries were reported.
Police have since launched investigations into the incident to establish responsibility for the burning of the garbage that triggered the fire.
