Mau Mau Veterans Endorse Ruto as Patron in Push for Compensation Claim

The Mau Mau War Veterans Association has unanimously endorsed President William Ruto as its new patron, marking a significant political shift following the passing of former ODM leader Raila Odinga.

The decision was reached during the association’s Annual General Meeting held at Kakamega Golf Club Hotel, where over 600 delegates backed Ruto to take up the symbolic yet influential role. The endorsement signals the group’s intention to align its advocacy efforts with the current administration.

Led by the association’s Director James Mahuria, members expressed confidence that President Ruto will accept the position and champion their long-standing grievances.

“Delegates have resolved that President Ruto be their patron following the demise of Raila,” Mahuria announced during the meeting.

Central to the association’s renewed push is a demand for compensation from the British government. The claim relates to land dispossession and historical injustices suffered by Mau Mau fighters and their families during Kenya’s struggle for independence.

The endorsement of Ruto is seen as a strategic move aimed at gaining stronger state backing in pursuing the compensation claim, which has remained unresolved for decades despite previous legal and diplomatic efforts.

At the same time, Mahuria revealed that the association is also seeking to promote national cohesion by calling for an end to the ongoing political tensions. He noted that the group plans to involve religious leaders in mediating and cooling down the escalating war of words among political actors.

The latest developments place the Mau Mau War Veterans Association at the intersection of historical justice and contemporary politics, as it seeks both recognition and restitution while navigating Kenya’s evolving political landscape.
