A man narrowly escaped death yesterday after an angry mob attempted to lynch him at Kibereke Centre in Kandara,Murang’a County, following claims circulating on social media that he was a serial killer operating in central Kenya.
The incident occurred yesterday night when police officers from Ng’araria Police Station rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call from Kawendo Assistant Chief, Kinyanjui who reported that residents had surrounded a man whose photograph was widely being shared on Facebook and other social media platforms labeling him a suspected serial killer linked to murders in both Kiambu and Murang’a counties.
Upon arrival, the officers found an agitated crowd preparing to attack the suspect, who had already been cornered by residents.
The man was identified as 32 year old George Oiche Okari, a casual laborer currently working around Ng’araria Centre.
According to police, Okari hails from Mageche Village in Nyamuche Location, Ogembo Sub County in Kisii County.
He had reportedly travelled to the area from Gatanga where he had been seeking casual work.
Members of the public claimed they had recognized him from a viral photo circulating online alleging he was behind a string of killings in the region.
However, police intervened before the situation escalated, rescuing him from the mob and escorting him to Kandara Police Station for his safety and questioning.
Authorities confirmed that the suspect is currently being held as investigations continue to verify the allegations circulating on social media.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) office in Kandara has been informed and has taken over the matter for further action.
Police have once again warned members of the public against taking the law into their own hands or acting on unverified information shared on social media, urging residents to report suspects to authorities instead of engaging in mob justice.
