Monicah Muthoni:Lamu Woman Representative,Two Term Presidential Stand Slogan Unstoppable

Lamu Woman Representative Monicah Muthoni Marubu has emerged as one of Kenya’s most outspoken young politicians.

She’s admired by supporters for her fearlessness and criticized by opponents for her unapologetic loyalty to President William Ruto.

On Saturday while in Kigumo,Murang’a County she found herself in “unwanted” territory when her popularisation of President William Ruto’s second bid chorus of two term chorus was met with a big resistance.

The event was the burial of Alice Wangari Gakuya, the mother of Embakasi North MP James Gakuya

Her speech was cut short and denied a chance to continue addressing mourners who included among others DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua and fiery ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna.

Muthoni was born and raised in Hindi, Lamu West, with family roots in Murang’a County.

Muthoni’s rise to national politics as she told Daily News Kenya-International in the recent past in Mpeketini is a story of persistence shaped by modest beginnings and early hardship.

She studied at Lamu Girls High School before earning a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations, Diplomacy and Foreign Affairs from USIU-Africa.

She added that the training she got at USIU-Africa, sharpened her public advocacy and political messaging.

Before elective politics, Muthoni built her career in public service and development, working at the LAPSSET Development Authority as Head of Community Liaison and Stakeholder Engagement, a role that immersed her in grassroots engagement and regional development issues.

She later served as a Member of the Lamu County Assembly, gaining firsthand experience in legislation and local governance.

Her first attempt at national politics in 2017 ended in defeat, but the loss strengthened her resolve.

In 2022, she made a comeback, winning the Lamu Woman Representative seat, becoming one of the youngest MPs in the 13th Parliament.

In Parliament, Muthoni has focused on women empowerment, youth and disability programs, education bursaries and access to national resources for marginalized coastal communities.

Although elected as an independent, she soon aligned herself with President Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration, arguing that supporting the government of the day was the surest way to deliver development to Lamu.

That decision, however, placed her on a collision course with critics and rival political camps.

The tension burst into national view in Kigumo, Murang’a County as indicated above when she was loudly heckled and forced to cut short her speech at a funeral after declaring her support for Ruto’s two term reelection bid.

The booing and drama turned a mourning ceremony into a political battleground, symbolizing the deep divisions within the broader Kenya Kwanza family and exposing her rift with allies of DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua.

For Muthoni, the incident was not a retreat signal but a statement of character.

She later made it clear that she would not dilute her convictions to please hostile crowds, insisting that politics should be about clarity, not convenience.

Her stance has brought both successes and setbacks.

She has gained visibility, influence and access to national leadership circles, but has also faced backlash at home and beyond, with critics warning that her unwavering “two-term” position could cost her political goodwill.

Personally, Muthoni keeps much of her private life, including her marital status, out of the public eye, choosing instead to project an image of a focused, self-made leader shaped by struggle rather than privilege.

Among her most quoted lines is her blunt declaration: “I am not on the one-term side; I belong to the two-term side,” a sentence that now defines her political brand.

To her supporters, the Kigumo heckling represents the price of courage in a polarized political era,to her critics, it is a warning sign.

To Muthoni herself, it stands as proof that she is willing to stand alone if necessary,a young coastal legislator determined to chart her path in Kenya’s unforgiving political arena, unbowed by boos and unmoved by pressure.
