Police in Maua have launched investigations after Kenya Power (KPLC) staff and police officers were assaulted during an operation to dismantle illegal electricity connections in Igembe South.
According to a police incident report filed at Maua Police Station,the incident occurred on Monday as a KPLC Operations and Maintenance team, escorted by two police officers, was en route to Athiru–Gaitu to remove unlawful power lines.
The team was allegedly blocked by a man identified as Samuel Mwirigi, who claimed to be a personal assistant to the area Member of Parliament.
He reportedly obstructed the road using a motorcycle, insisting the operation be halted.
Police say a search on the suspect revealed KPLC materials including aluminium conductors, two transformer fuses, iron climbers and a safety belt.
The items were seized as exhibits and the suspect arrested and booked at Maua Police Station.
Tensions escalated later when Igembe South MP John Paul Mwirigi allegedly stormed the station accompanied by a rowdy crowd.
In the ensuing chaos, KPLC staff member Justus Gichuru was reportedly assaulted and sustained head injuries.
Police officers were not spared.
Constable Samuel Mukami allegedly suffered injuries to the mouth after being punched, while Corporal Lawrence Adir sustained an injury to his right knee while attempting to restore order.
Police say the matter is under active investigation as police record statements and assess the extent of injuries and damage.
