A major investigation has been launched after a large consignment of narcotic drugs kept as court exhibits mysteriously disappeared from the exhibit store at the Port Victoria Law Courts in Busia County.
According to a police report filed at Port Victoria on February 24,the incident was reported by Ann Karimi Njeru, the Head of Station at Port Victoria Law Courts.
She indicated that on February 24, 2026, she received intelligence from a source that an exhibit linked to Criminal Case E116 of 2024, Republic versus Hesbon Wafula Ofayi, was missing from the court’s exhibit store.
Following the report, police officers and detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Bunyala visited the scene.
Upon inspection, they discovered that the exhibit consisting of six bags of Cannabis Sativa weighing 268 kilograms and valued at approximately Sh 8,040,000 was missing.
Shockingly, the officers found that the bags had been replaced with sawdust of the same quantity, raising suspicion of possible tampering within the court exhibit storage system.
Investigations further established that when the exhibit was produced before court on October 28, 2025, it was returned to the exhibit store intact for safe custody after the court session.
The disappearance was confirmed during a joint inspection led by Ann and attended by several court officials including Resident Magistrate Eunice Serem, Court Administrator Reuben Kiyai, Court Secretary Juliana Nyagechi, Registry In-Charge Vincent Koech, Court Accountant Shaddy Mamachi, and Procurement Officer Karen Oliya.
The scene was processed and documented by investigators, and an inquiry file has since been opened to establish how the narcotics vanished from the secure court storage.
Detectives from DCI Bunyala have taken over the investigation as authorities seek to determine whether there was internal collusion or a breach of security at the court facility.
No arrests have been made so far.
