Newborn Rescued Alive From Pit Latrine in Likoni

Police in Likoni,Mombasa county are investigating an incident in which a newborn baby was found alive inside a pit latrine at Vyemani Village.

The incident was reported early today morning by the area assistant chief of Vyemani SubLocation Salim Nyawa

This was after residents heard cries coming from a pit latrine at a residential compound.

Officers led by the duty officer rushed to the scene and established that a tenant at the premises, identified as Margaret Umazi, a woman of Digo origin, had allegedly concealed her pregnancy and gave birth while inside the washroom before disposing of the newborn into the pit latrine.

The house caretaker, Munga Tsuma, alerted authorities after the alarming discovery.

Umazi who was reportedly weak following delivery, had already been rushed to Likoni Subcounty Hospital for medical attention by the time police arrived.

The Likoni Sub.County Fire Brigade, working alongside medics from Murima Hospital, carried out a rescue operation and successfully retrieved the male infant from the pit latrine.

The baby was immediately taken to Murima Maternity Hospital, where he was reported to be in fair condition and receiving medical care.

Police have opened an inquiry into the matter, which is being handled as a case of suspected concealment of birth.
