Police in Shinyalu, Kakamega East have launched investigations into a suspected concealing birth incident after a newborn baby was dramatically rescued alive from a pit latrine in Itenyi Sub-Location.
According to a police report recorded today, the incident was reported by Assistant Chief Alexander Alusa of Itenyi Sub-Location, who alerted officers after residents heard a baby crying from inside a pit latrine at the homestead of the late Saul Mbiya in Lucheo Village, about one kilometre from Shinyalu Police Station.
Officers rushed to the scene and confirmed that a newborn baby was trapped inside the pit latrine and crying.
With the assistance of members of the public, police managed to safely rescue the infant.
A woman believed to be the mother, who had earlier been expectant, alleged that at around 4:30 a.m. she experienced labour pains and went to the pit latrine to relieve herself when the baby was unexpectedly delivered.
She later sought medical attention at Modern Sub-County Hospital, where she was informed that she had already given birth.
Following the rescue, both the baby and the mother were escorted by police to Kakamega General Hospital, where they were admitted in stable condition.
Police said the motive behind the incident is yet to be established, and the matter is being investigated by officers from Shinyalu Police Station.
Authorities have urged the public to report such incidents promptly and emphasized the importance of maternal support and access to emergency medical services.
