NPR Officer Killed, 150 Cattle Stolen in Tigania East

A National Police Reservist (NPR) officer was shot dead and over 150 head of cattle stolen during a bandit raid in Tigania East Meru County on Thursday.

According to a police report made at Mula Police Station,the incident was reported by Mwangi Shadrack.

He stated to police that livestock belonging to several herders numbering to 150 had been driven away by the attackers after the raid by suspected Samburu and Turkana bandits while grazing at Kamberia Sub-location in Mula Location, Amuthumba Division in the afternoon.

Police officers from Mula and Muthara Police Stations responded to the scene and established that an NPR officer identified as John Kimathi had been fatally shot during the attack.

His government issued G3 rifle along with three magazines loaded with 60 rounds of ammunition, was stolen by the attackers.

During the raid, a total of 150 cattle belonging to different herders were driven away by the bandits.

The affected livestock owners include:
Kimathi Lawrence Peter – 35 cattle
Mururu Shadrack – 40 cattle
David Mureithi – 10 cattle
John Kimathi – 40 cattle
Benson Gitonga – 8 cattle
Meika Kairesi – 17 cattle.

Police officers who responded to the attack engaged the suspects in a shoot out.

The body of the slain NPR officer was moved to St John of God Mission Hospital Tigania mortuary where it is awaiting a post mortem examination.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Tigania East has launched investigations into the incident.

Security agencies have intensified operations in the area to pursue the attackers and recover the stolen livestock.
