Veteran trade unionist Edward Nyerere has formally entered the race for the National General Secretary position of the County Government Workers Union of Kenya (CGWUK).
His entry sets the stage for a closely watched showdown against incumbent Roba Duba in elections scheduled for later this month in Nakuru.
Nyerere, a former Branch Secretary of the Nairobi County Branch, is widely regarded as a seasoned union administrator.
He honed his leadership skills under the mentorship of the late Boniface Munyao, the respected former General Secretary of CGWUK, whose tenure is often credited with strengthening the union’s national profile.
Supporters describe Nyerere as a grassroots mobilizer with deep institutional memory and a reformist agenda aimed at revitalizing worker representation across county governments.
His candidacy introduces a competitive dynamic into the contest, challenging Duba’s incumbency in what observers expect to be a tightly fought campaign.
With Nakuru set to host the decisive vote, the race is shaping up as a defining moment for CGWUK’s future direction, as delegates weigh continuity against change in union leadership.
