Busia County voters have voiced their support for Busia Governor Paul Otuoma to be considered for the position of Secretary General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), saying he possesses the experience and national influence needed to steady the party.
In random interviews conducted across various parts of the county, several residents expressed confidence that Dr Otuoma would help stabilize the party’s structures both in Busia and nationally.
“The governor is a panacea for ODM in the county and beyond,” said one electorate member during an interview in Busia town.
“He understands grassroots politics and has the ability to unite members who feel sidelined.”
The calls come amid ongoing internal discussions within ODM regarding leadership positions, including that of Secretary General, currently held by Edwin Sifuna.
Some voters argued that Dr Otuoma’s administrative experience and longstanding ties within ODM would enable him to patch up what they described as fractured membership in Busia County and strengthen party cohesion across western Kenya.
Others compared him to potential contenders, including Busia County Woman Representative Catherine Omanyo, noting that while she remains an influential figure, the governor’s executive background gives him an edge.
“Dr Otuoma has served in various capacities and commands respect beyond Busia.
“ODM will be stable with him at the helm of its secretariat,” said another resident in Funyula.
Political analysts note that ODM’s Secretary General plays a critical role in coordinating party activities, managing internal structures, and steering communication strategies nationally.
Efforts to reach ODM’s national leadership for comment on the sentiments expressed by Busia residents were futile by the time of going to press.
The debate signals renewed political activity within Busia County as party members position themselves ahead of possible internal reorganizations within ODM.
