Police in Diani are investigating an incident of student unrest at Gombato Boys Senior Secondary School in Msabweni,Kwale County that led to extensive destruction of school property and the disappearance of more than 170 students from the institution.
According to a report filed at Diani Police Station the disturbance occurred on Saturday night at around 7:30 p.m. while students were watching television within the school compound at Darling area, Diani Township.
The school’s boarding master Baya Baraka, told police that a section of students quietly left the TV watching area and moved behind classrooms, where they began throwing stones, breaking window panes and damaging iron sheets.
The unrest quickly escalated, causing panic among students and prompting a chaotic movement toward the main gate.
Police officers from Diani Police Station rushed to the scene where they interviewed the boarding master, two security guards, and several students including a deputy student leader.

Preliminary findings indicate that the unrest was triggered by long standing complaints over what students described as substandard and monotonous food.
The damage extended to unfinished walls of the school kitchen, which is currently under construction, as well as multiple classroom windows and roofing materials.
During a roll call conducted after calm was restored, only 33 students were accounted for, with 173 others missing.
Police believe the missing students fled the school immediately after causing the destruction.
The scene was processed, patrols intensified, and normalcy was restored later in the night.
