More than 420,000 people have directly benefited from enterprise development and job creation initiatives spearheaded by Hand in Hand Eastern Africa (HiH EA), positioning the organization as one of the region’s leading drivers of grassroots economic transformation.

Since its establishment in 2010, the NGO has facilitated the creation of nearly 396,000 enterprises and over 534,000 jobs, targeting primarily women and youth from low-income households.

Its strategic projection under the 2023–2027 plan aims to move families from surviving on less than two dollars a day to earning sustainable incomes exceeding eight dollars daily through structured business development support.

At the core of HiH EA’s strategy is a four-pillar enterprise model focusing on social mobilization, business training, savings-led microfinance, and market linkages.

Communities are organized into self-help groups where members receive financial literacy training, entrepreneurship skills, and access to affordable credit.

The approach not only builds businesses but also strengthens resilience, promotes gender inclusion, and integrates climate-smart and circular economy practices.

In Kenya, the organization operates in 40 out of 47 counties, reaching both rural and urban populations.

Its footprint includes major counties such as Nairobi, Kisumu County, Mombasa County, and Homa Bay County, among others.

Through partnerships with county governments and development agencies, HiH EA is implementing targeted programmes such as the Building Inclusive and Resilient Enterprises (BIRE) initiative, which supports green enterprises, particularly in waste management and regenerative agriculture value chains.

Beyond Kenya, the organization has extended its operations to Tanzania, where it works with rural communities to promote entrepreneurship and financial inclusion, further expanding its regional impact in Eastern Africa.

Officials say the strategic focus going forward will be on scaling sustainable enterprises, deepening digital financial inclusion, strengthening climate resilience, and creating dignified employment opportunities for women and youth.

With a proven community driven model and expanding county partnerships, Hand in Hand Eastern Africa continues to position enterprise development as a practical and lasting pathway out of poverty.
