Detectives in Mtito Andei, Makueni County, have arrested a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officer, a Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer and a civilian following allegations that the trio had been soliciting money from bar owners while masquerading as law enforcement officers.
According to a report filed at Mtito Andei Police Station,DCI officers acted on information from members of the public who reported suspicious individuals moving around Mtito Andei Township demanding money from bar operators.
The suspects were allegedly using a motor vehicle fitted with a concealed number plate.
At around 9:00pm on Wednesday,detectives intercepted and arrested three men travelling in a Toyota Axio that was initially bearing registration number KDB 648W.
Upon further inspection, officers established that the vehicle’s genuine registration number was KDD 547W.
The suspects were identified as Samuel Ogando Odoyo,a KDF officer attached to Moi Airbase, Nairobi; Onyango Nelson Kasera, a DCI officer stationed at DCI headquarters and Joseph Mulwa Mwambi, a businessman based in Nairobi.
A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of several items, including a Kenya Defence Forces identification card bearing the name of Cpl Samuel Ogando Odoyo, a DCI staff card, a black pistol holster labelled OSG, a pair of handcuffs, a button sword, two blank National Police Service calling letters, a warrant of arrest in execution document, and assorted national identity documents belonging to the suspects.
Police said the trio was placed in custody pending further investigations.
The Kenya Defence Forces have been formally notified of the arrest of their officer, while detectives from DCI Mtito Andei have taken over the case.
