Police in Ntimaru,Migori county, have thwarted an operation in which unruly youths attempted to forcibly recircumcise and rob a middle aged man.
During the operation,they arrested 27 suspects and rescued the victim in a swift security response.
The incident occurred yesterday (Monday) in Lewangwe Village, Bwirege Central Location.
According to police, a group of youths armed with pangas, simis, and other crude weapons stormed the home of a 49 year old man, identified as Elias Murimi Sabas.
One of the attackers openly threatened the victim, declaring “Leo lazima utahiri” (Today you must be circumcised), before the gang descended on him, assaulted him, and robbed him of Sh 14,600.
The victim was then forcefully abducted and escorted towards an illegal circumcision site as the youths sang and chanted circumcision songs, raising fear and panic within the village.
His cries for help attracted attention, prompting a rapid police response that intercepted the group, rescued the victim, and escorted him safely to Ntimaru Police Station.
During the operation, officers arrested 27 suspects and recovered several offensive weapons.
The suspects were placed in custody and are set to be charged with abduction, forced illegal recircumcision, robbery with violence, and unlawful assembly and procession.
Police too arrested a female circumciser, Mary Kisiri, after establishing that she had forcibly subjected a 17 year old girl and a form three student at Kwibancha Girls Secondary School to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) at her home in Giboma Village, Bwirege West Location.
The suspect is expected to face charges under the Anti-FGM Act, alongside counts of assault and intimidation.
Police have condemned the incidents, describing them as grave violations of human rights and criminal acts disguised as cultural practices.
They added that security operations will continue in the area until calm is fully restored.
