A police officer attached to Tangi Tano Police Post in Gilgil has died after shooting a female bar owner before turning the gun on himself.
The incident occured at a local pub in Naivasha on Thursday,January 1(new year).
According to a police report from Kongoni Police Station, the shocking incident occurred at about 7:30pm at Lucy’s Pub.
The pub, is a popular local bar within the CESS Police Post area.
A Corporal reported to the Officer Commanding Kachuma Police Post of the shooting followed by officers from the post to rush to the scene.
On arrival they found two people lying in pools of blood outside the pub.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased officer, identified as Corporal Collins Kochei, had shot Lucy Wanjiru Njoroge the owner of the establishment.
She sustained gunshot wounds to both breasts and her right thigh.
After the shooting, the officer is reported to have turned his AK-47 rifle on himself, shooting through the chin with the bullet exiting through the forehead.
Both victims were rushed to Nakuru Provincial General Hospital by a Good Samaritan.
Corporal Kochei was pronounced dead on arrival, while Lucy was admitted in critical condition and remains under medical care.
Senior police officers, including the Station Commander Kongoni, the Sub-County Police Commander (SCPC) Naivasha, and the Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer (SCCIO) Naivasha, visited the scene.
The firearm involved, an AK-47 rifle, was secured as investigations continue.
Corporal Kochei’s body has been moved to the Nakuru PGH mortuary pending post mortem examination.
Police have not yet established the motive behind the incident.
