A domestic dispute believed to be linked to a love triangle turned tragic on Wednesday when a girlfriend to a police officer was critically injured in a shooting incident.
The incident occured inside the officer’s house in Kyuso township, Kitui County.
The incident occurred at around 4.30pm.
According to the officer,he reported that he had briefly left his residence after securing his loaded Jericho pistol when he heard a gunshot moments later.
On returning to the house about 30 minutes later, he found his girlfriend lying on the bed with a gunshot wound.
Police who responded to the incident recovered two bullet holes at the scene, a spent cartridge and a bullet head, raising serious questions over how the firearm was discharged.
The injured woman was rushed to hospital in critical condition, where she is currently receiving treatment.
Investigators suspect the shooting may have been an attempted suicide following a domestic disagreement reportedly involving a love triangle.
The house was immediately secured as a crime scene to allow forensic officers to carry out detailed examinations.
Police took the firearm used in the shooting as investigations continue to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
Police said once investigations are through they will prefer criminal charges on the culprit.
