A police officer was killed and several civilians injured on Thursday afternoon after heavily armed bandits ambushed a livestock convoy in Samburu East SubCounty, police have confirmed.
A report seen by our Correspondent filed at Archers Post Police Station, the attack occurred at around 4:30 pm in the Naisunyei area.
Police officers were escorting two lorries transporting livestock from Lolnguniani Market in Wamba Sub-location.
The convoy was reportedly ambushed by about 30 bandits armed with AK-47 and M16 rifles, who opened fire on the vehicles.
One of the lorries was hit during the attack.
A police Constable and the owner of the cattle being transported were injured during the incident.
Four other people too were injured and are receiving treatment.
They included the lorry driver who was shot on the right leg.
The injured were initially rushed to Archers Post Catholic Mission Hospital before being transferred to Isiolo County Referral Hospital for further treatment.
Police said the fallen officer’s AK-47 rifle loaded with 19 rounds of ammunition was recovered at the scene.
During the ambush, the attackers also made away with 17 head of cattle.
Area leaders and police have condemned the attack, which highlights the persistent insecurity challenges facing pastoral and transport routes in parts of northern Kenya.
