One police recruit has died while 24 others sustained serious injuries following a fatal road traffic accident involving a civilian motor vehicle in Nyeri County.
According to a report filed at Nyeri Traffic Base today morning, the accident occurred at about 2:45 a.m. along the Marua–Chaka Road, near Rubis Petrol Station.
The incident involved a Toyota Fielder registration driven by Stephen Makara Kiriungi and a group of 25 police recruit constables who were on an early morning physical training run.
Police said the recruits were running on the left side of the road, heading from Chaka direction towards the National Police Service Main Campus, Kiganjo, when the vehicle, travelling from Chaka towards Marua, failed to comply with traffic signs and police signals issued by officers on duty at the scene.
The vehicle allegedly did not stop as required and rammed into Squad 50B of the recruits.
As a result of the impact, recruit Constable John Leaky, aged 24, sustained critical injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival at Mathari Mission Hospital.
His body has been preserved at the hospital mortuary pending postmortem examination.
The other 24 recruit constables sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the same hospital.
The scene was visited by traffic police officers, and all necessary procedures were undertaken.
The motor vehicle involved was towed to the police station yard for inspection.
Police have indicated that further updates will be provided as investigations progress.
