Police officers at Mackinnon Police Station have rescued a 17 year old girl from an forced marriage in Samburu SubbCounty, Kwale County.
This followed a timely intelligence report.
According to a police report filed on Sunday, officers received information that a Maasai man, identified as Dokta Asai, aged about 47 and a resident of Oldonyo Village in the Meli Kubwa area, was planning to receive bride price for his daughter aged 17.
The girl, who was due to report to Kwale Girls High School next week for Grade 10, reportedly fled from home upon learning of the planned marriage.
She was later traced and rescued by police officers working together with her former teachers.
Investigations revealed that the girl was allegedly being prepared for marriage to a man identified as Bati Mayo, aged 27 years old from Maasai community of Nyango area Kinango.
Police visited the family homestead, but the father was not found.
Only the girl’s mother and other children were present at the time of the visit.
Efforts to trace the father are ongoing.
The rescued minor has since been placed in a safe place and is scheduled to be presented to the Children’s Department in Samburu Sub County for further protection and assistance.
