Tension gripped Macalder Police Station in Nyatike,Migori county on Friday after a peaceful demonstration over the shooting of a local resident turned violent.
The incident left property destroyed and at least 20 police officers injured.
According to a police made at the station in the evening,the protests began in the morning when area residents took to the streets to demonstrate over the shooting of a businessman Peter Onyango the previous night.
The demonstrations initially started peacefully but later turned chaotic when groups of youths became rowdy and began attacking government property.
Protesters reportedly vandalized the Macalder Police Station and the Nyatike Deputy County Commissioner’s (DCC) office gate.
Police officers from the Station and the Administration Police Service (APS) in Nyatike attempted to control the crowd throughout the day. However, the situation escalated when the protesters regrouped and overwhelmed the officers before storming the police station.
During the incident, several government vehicles and infrastructure were destroyed.
A Toyota Land Cruiser registration number GKB 039U was completely burnt.
A Ford Ranger registration number GKB 885Y belonging to Macalder Police Station sustained extensive damage, including shattered windshields and windows, dented body panels, damaged doors, a broken side mirror, and a cracked rear windshield.
Two construction machines that had been kept as exhibits at the station were also vandalized.
An orange Develon DX300LCA excavator had all its windows and doors shattered, while a yellow JCB 3DX backhoe loader had its screens destroyed.
Within the station, several offices were damaged, including the report office, the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) office, and the Sub-County Police Commander’s (SCPC) office, all of which had their window panes broken.
The DCI exhibit store also suffered damage, while a police line consisting of six officers’ houses was completely burnt down, reducing everything inside to ashes.
During the violence, 20 police officers sustained injuries of varying degrees.
Among them were Chief Inspector Edward Ibwaga who suffered a deep cut on the forehead, Inspector Shadrack Londo who was injured on the right cheek and chest, and Chief Inspector Nicholas Makau who sustained a collarbone injury.
The Officer Commanding Station Kana Barchi also suffered a deep cut on the forehead and an injury near the left eye.
Other officers injured include Corporal Stanley Martim, Police Constable Esther Nchape, PC Joel Pketch, PC Benson Omambia, PC George Nyalwanga, PC Ali Shindo, PC Jeremiah Allo, PC Vincent Langat, Corporal Lilian Amimo, APC/W Maureen Ghati, PC/W Lynet Nawire, APC Monari Davis, PC Kisaka Davies, Corporal Christopher Murey, PC Jackton Ongus, and Vincent Esegon.
All the injured officers were rushed to Migori County Referral Hospital and Life Care Hospital for treatment.
Police say investigations are ongoing and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Nyatike has taken over the case.
