What began as a promising political tour by President William Ruto in Western Kenya has reportedly hit a snag, halting a planned wave of defections from ODM to the UDA.
The President, who arrived in the region on Sunday for a couple of days tour covering four counties, was expected to oversee the defection of at least 10 ODM Members of Parliament.
However, sources indicate that the plan stalled after his mood reportedly shifted on Tuesday, leading to sharp attacks on the character of several opposition leaders, some drawn from the very region he was touring.
Among those rumoured to have been warming up to UDA are Khwisero MP Christopher Aseka, Teso North MP Oku Kaunya, Navakholo MP Emmanuel Wangwe, and Butula MP Joseph Oyula.
The political atmosphere on the ground is now described as tense, with insiders suggesting that no MP is willing to risk what they perceive as “political suicide” by defecting under the current conditions.
President Ruto is today expected to continue his tour in Busia County, where he is set to launch the construction of a 10,000-seater international stadium, even as uncertainty looms over the anticipated political realignments.
