Rival Luo council of elders factions hold parallel coronations in Kilifi

By Our Reporter,Kilifi.

Kilifi County yesterday witnessed an unusual cultural and leadership showdown as two parallel ceremonies were held to install separate chairpersons of the Luo Council of Elders within the county.

The first high profile event took place at Pwani University grounds in Kilifi Town, drawing a large crowd of approximately 2,000 attendees.

The ceremony was graced by Kilifi Governor Gideon Maitha Mung’aro, who served as the chief guest.

He was received by National Luo Council of Elders (KERR) Chairman Odungi Randa, assisted by Coast Region elder Obara Kings.

Also present were prominent leaders including youth PS Fikirini Jacobs, Kilifi North MP Owen Baya, and Kilifi South MP Richard Ken Chonga, alongside representatives from various community elder groups.

During this ceremony, William Okoth Adero was formally installed as the Chairman of the Luo Council of Elders in Kilifi County.

In a symbolic gesture, Governor Mung’aro was also recognized and bestowed as a Luo elder.

At the same time, a rival faction held a separate installation ceremony at Utamaduni Grounds in the Kiwandani area within Kilifi Township.

This parallel event, also attended by about 2,000 people, saw Oloo Okumu installed as Chairman by Deputy County Luo Elder Samuel Onyango and other elders aligned to the group.

Despite the apparent leadership rivalry, both events were conducted peacefully under tight security provided by police officers and other security agencies.

No incidents were reported at either venue.
The simultaneous ceremonies highlight emerging divisions within the Luo Council of Elders in Kilifi County, raising questions about unity and legitimacy within the community leadership structure.
