Senior Counsel Charles Kanjama:52nd LSK President Elect

By Our Reporter,Nairobi

Senior Counsel Charles Kanjama is now the 52nd president of Law Society of Kenya (LSK) following a hotly contested poll that had two other contestants.

Kanjama is one of Kenya’s most distinguished legal practitioners. He is the Managing Partner at Muma & Kanjama Advocates, where he also heads the Disputes Department and has built a reputation for excellence in complex litigation.

He began his legal professional journey at TripleOKLaw (Ochieng’ Onyango Kibet & Ohaga Advocates where he worked as a Legal Assistant/Associate (2001–2005).

Over the years, Kanjama has established himself as a formidable advocate in constitutional litigation, commercial law, tax, intellectual property, ICT law, arbitration, and mediation.

He has appeared before all levels of the Kenyan judiciary, including the Supreme Court, handling high-profile and precedent-setting matters.

Kanjama’s credentials reflect a rare breadth of expertise.

An alumni of University of Nairobi (UoN, 1997-2001), Kanjama is a Fellow Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb), a Certified Professional Mediator (CPM), a Certified Public Secretary (CPS, 2004-2005) and a Certified Public Accountant (CPA, 1998-2001).

In addition to his extensive legal practice, he is a published author and co-authored a book: Family Law Digest: Matrimonial Property, a resource widely regarded in family law circles.

In August 2022, he was conferred the prestigious rank of Senior Counsel by President Uhuru Kenyatta in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the legal profession and his distinguished service at the Bar.

Kanjama has played an active role in the leadership of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK).

He served as the inaugural Chair of the LSK Nairobi Branch from 2016 to 2020, and previously as an LSK Council Member and Treasurer between 2012 and 2014. His election as LSK President underscores the confidence members have in his leadership and vision for the profession.

Beyond the courtroom, Kanjama is actively engaged in public and civic life. He chairs the Kenya Christian Professionals Forum (KCPF) which he chaired between 2020-2023 and is known for his advocacy of ethical leadership, the rule of law, and strong family values.

He is a member of Roman Catholic’s Opus Dei, a lay and clerical organization whose members seek personal Christian perfection through ordinary life — helping people find God in their work and ordinary life, teaching everyone is called to be holy.

“I convey hearty congratulations to Charles Kanjama SC on his resounding win in todays Election to become the 52nd President of the Law Society of Kenya. His record of dutiful service to the society and contributions to development of governance in Kenya make him a worthy torchbearer of the LSK’s vision and mandate.

I wish you all the best in your tenure, SC. You inherit the leadership of a united, stable and forward-looking society which can achieve great success if steered diligently and tactfully. The people of Kenya will look up to your leadership as we get into a high-stakes electioneering period, and I am hopeful that you will offer the required leadership and remain committed to the rule of law and constitution.

Serve with distinction,”said I warmly congratulate Senior Counsel Charles Kanjama on his election as the 52nd President of the Law Society of Kenya for the 2026 to 2028 term. This is a well earned mandate, grounded in years of principled service, integrity and steadfast commitment to the rule of law.

Your RIPE agenda, Rule of Law, Integrity, Practice and Welfare, and Engagement, speaks to the moment our nation finds itself in. The pledge to publish an annual Rule of Law Report, to complete the Wakili Towers project transparently, to establish a Training Institute, and to strengthen the welfare and mentorship of young advocates reflects practical leadership anchored in values. A strong bar is the guardian of a strong Constitution.

I also commend the outgoing President, Faith Odhiambo, for her courageous stewardship. Her firm defence of constitutional rights during the 2024 Gen Z protests and her insistence on accountability restored the moral authority of the LSK presidency. She leaves office with honour.

I recognise too the Young Bar, whose vigilance and fidelity to the Constitution of Kenya 2010 have been a steady reminder that the defence of liberty belongs to every generation.

As we approach the 2027 General Election, the LSK must remain the unwavering sentinel of Chapter Six, the Bill of Rights and judicial independence. I am confident that President Kanjama will rise to that calling.

I wish you and the incoming Council every success.the immediate former President Faith Adhiambo.

In his message of congratulations to Kanjama Wipere leader Kalonzo Musyoka said “I warmly congratulate Senior Counsel Charles Kanjama on his election as the 52nd President of the Law Society of Kenya for the 2026 to 2028 term.
