Collins Sichenje’s chapter at Serbian side Vojvodina has officially come to an end, with the 22-year-old Kenyan international embarking on a new journey in English football after completing a move to Charlton Athletic.
The Addicks splashed out €2.2 million (approximately Sh334 million) to secure the defender’s services, making Sichenje the eighth biggest sale in Vojvodina’s history.
Despite the lucrative deal, Vojvodina head coach Miroslav Tanjga has revealed that the club was keen to retain the Harambee Stars defender at least until the end of the season.
Tanjga admitted that while Vojvodina stood to benefit even more financially by waiting until June, the emotional weight of the offer made it impossible to stand in the player’s way.
“We wanted him to stay until June, and we would probably have received even better offers then,” Tanjga said.
“But what can you do when a lad from Kenya gets an offer from London? For him and his family, it was a dream come true, and he made that very clear to us.”
According to the Vojvodina boss, Sichenje had mentally checked out once the Charlton bid arrived, with his focus fully fixed on the move to England.
“He no longer saw himself at Vojvodina and was focused solely on that offer from England. We can’t force anyone to stay at the club. Even though the bid was financially excellent for us, we didn’t want to look at the situation purely from an economic point of view.”
Sichenje’s departure is a significant blow to Vojvodina’s title ambitions, as his presence even for another six months would have strengthened their defensive push in the race for silverware.
Nevertheless, the club has accepted the reality of life without the Kenyan defender.
Now in London, Sichenje is already settling into his new surroundings and could be in line for a potential debut for Charlton Athletic against QPR, scheduled for Thursday night at 11:00pm (EAT), as he begins a new and defining chapter in his career.
