Six Police Officers Injured After Al-Shabaab IED Attack in Elwak, Mandera

Six police officers were injured on Friday morning after a vehicle belonging to officers from Elwak Police Station was hit by an improvised explosive device (IED).

The incident was followed by an ambush by the militants along the Elwak–Wargadud road in Mandera County.

According to a police report logged at Elwak Police Station today morning,the incident occurred at about 6:30 a.m. when officers were travelling to Udole Pit for relieving duties.

The officers, fifteen in total, were travelling in a station vehicle,while overtaking a Habib bus heading toward Mandera, the police vehicle was struck by a directional IED believed to have been planted along the roadside.

Police say the explosion was followed by an ambush from the militants.

The blast caused significant damage to the police cruiser, shattering the windscreen, breaking the side mirrors and damaging the doors.

Two rear windows of the bus were also shattered by the impact.

The bus driver reportedly sped through the scene without stopping.

Six officers sustained injuries during the attack.

Police said the remaining officers were accounted for and appeared unharmed.

Following the attack, the Sub-County Security Team visited the scene alongside a team from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), who launched combing operations in pursuit of the militants.

The scene has since been processed and investigations are ongoing, with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (DCI-ATPU) Elwak Detachment handling the case.

Security agencies have increased vigilance in the area as efforts continue to track down the millitants.
