Police in Mbeere North have launched investigations after a political rally turned chaotic in Ngunyumu area, Evurore Ward, following an alleged disruption by rival politicians that left a cameraman injured and equipment damaged.
According to a police report filed at Kanyuambora Police Post, the incident occurred on Monday evening during a food distribution exercise organized by the Economic Development Party (NEDP) which is led by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko Mbuvi.
The complaint was lodged by NEDP Secretary General Bernard Mulwa, who told police that the event was disrupted by DP leader Justin Muturi and a group of his supporters.
In the ensuing confrontation, NEDP cameraman Wilson Wachira was allegedly assaulted, sustaining injuries to his left hand.
During the scuffle, Wachira’s Canon camera, valued at Sh 190,000, was damaged, while his spectacles worth Sh 8,000 were also broken.
He later rushed to Kanyuambora Police Post to report the incident.
Police at Ishiara Station have since recorded the matter as Pending Under Investigation (PUI), with officers from Ishiara handling the case as political temperatures continue to rise in the region.
Authorities have urged political leaders and their supporters to exercise restraint and respect the rule of law as campaigns intensify ahead of upcoming political activities.
