A section of students from Bumula Secondary School in Bumula, Bungoma County tidar morning staged a peaceful demonstration to protest what they termed as poor management and deteriorating conditions at the institution.
Police said the protest began at around 6.00 a.m.when the students marched to the County Director of Education’s office to formally present their grievances.
According to an incident report recorded at Bumula Police Station unde, the learners expressed dissatisfaction with the continued absence of a substantive school principal, noting that the institution is currently being run by a deputy principal in an acting capacity.
The students also raised concerns over low enrolment at the school, proposing that they be absorbed into Bumula Girls Secondary School and that their current school be closed.
They further complained of dilapidated infrastructure requiring urgent repairs, persistent water shortages, and an acute lack of science teachers.
Education officials addressed the concerns during the engagement, after which arrangements were made to facilitate the students’ return to school. The learners agreed to resume classes, bringing the unrest to an end at about 11.00 a.m.
Police confirmed that the demonstrations were peaceful and no injuries or destruction of property were reported.
