A man who was arrested by detectives from the Banking Fraud Investigation Unit (BFIU) over alleged cyber fraudster has been charged.
Seth Mwabe Okwanyo, also known as Seth Onyango Odhiambo, was charged over a sophisticated scheme that led to the loss of Sh11.4 million from a leading microfinance institution.
His arraignment at a Milimani court followed a formal complaint lodged by the institution regarding a major cyber intrusion that occurred on July 16, 2025, during which 38 fraudulent transactions were executed through its system.
The transactions resulted in a cumulative loss of Sh11,410,165, having bypassed the institution’s internal monitoring and control mechanisms.
Investigators established that the fraudulent transactions did not appear in the institution’s internal records but were reflected as successful on the recipients’ end.
This anomaly raised red flags and pointed to deliberate interference with the system.
Further forensic analysis revealed that both system and database logs had been erased, a move believed to have been intended to conceal the digital trail of the crime.
The probe also uncovered the unauthorised installation of a malicious Java application within the system.
Authorities say the application enabled the suspect to manipulate transaction processes, siphon off funds, and subsequently launder the stolen money through multiple accomplices.
Appearing before the court, Okwanyo faced 20 counts, including Unauthorised Access to a Computer System, Computer Fraud, and Money Laundering.
He pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The court granted the suspect bail on a bond of Sh1.5 million or an alternative cash bail of Sh500,000.
He’s scheduled to appear in court again for the mention of the case on March 3, 2026, as investigators continue to pursue additional suspects and unravel the wider network behind the cybercrime.
