Police officers in Meru have arrested a 21-year-old man and recovered a toy pistol following a phone snatching incident near Mosha Supermarket in Meru Town.
According to police reports, officers from Meru Police Station, while on routine patrol on Tuesday evening arrested Eric Muthoni Karimi, a resident of Mjini area.
With the assistance of Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit (CIPU) officers guarding the supermarket nabbed him.
The suspect is accused of snatching a Samsung Galaxy A06, black in colour and valued at approximately Sh 21,000, from Emmaculate Kathomi.
A search conducted at the time of arrest led to the recovery of a toy pistol made of wood and metal, painted black, which had been concealed on the suspect’s right hip and covered by his shirt.
Police believe the imitation weapon was being used to intimidate members of the public into submission during criminal activities.
The stolen mobile phone was also recovered.
He was escorted to Meru Police Station, where he is currently being held in lawful custody as investigations continue.
Police say he will assist officers with further inquiries and possible recoveries.
The recovered items have been secured as exhibits.
