Tanzania’s University of Dar es Salaam, in partnership with the Zanzibar Ministry of Blue Economy and Fisheries, has launched a 300 million Tanzanian shillings (about 120,000 U.S. dollars) research initiative to strengthen seaweed farming through scientific innovation and technology.
The government backed project will be implemented in Zanzibar, as well as in Mafia and Bagamoyo on the mainland.
“Seaweed farming is among the most important sectors in the country, as more than 36,000 people, particularly women and youth, are self-employed through this activity,” said Omar Saleh Mohamed, an official from the Zanzibar Ministry of Blue Economy and Fisheries, on Tuesday.
Amelia Buriyo, the project’s principal investigator from the University of Dar es Salaam, said the research will focus on key challenges in the sector, including access to quality seedlings and the management of climate change related diseases in marine ecosystems.
She added that activities will be conducted in Unguja, Pemba, Mafia, Dar es Salaam and Bagamoyo, and that the program also includes training for postgraduate students to build local expertise.
