Tanzanian authorities on Monday urged countries sharing Lake Tanganyika to strengthen cooperation in addressing security, environmental and cross-border crime challenges.
Ally Senga Gugu, permanent secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs, made the call while opening the Second International Conference on Lake Tanganyika Security Cooperation in Dar es Salaam.
The conference focused on tackling piracy, illegal fishing and other transnational crimes on and around the lake shared by Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi and Zambia.
Gugu said enhanced cooperation through intelligence sharing, joint patrols and preventive measures was essential to address growing threats such as smuggling, human trafficking and armed robbery.
Lake Tanganyika, Africa’s second largest freshwater lake, is a major transport corridor and fishing ground for millions of people in the four countries.
