Veteran city lawyer Paul Mwangi, long regarded as one of the most trusted legal and political confidants of the late ODM leader Raila Odinga, has built a reputation over decades as a sharp legal mind and a quiet but influential strategist at the heart of Kenya’s opposition politics.
Mwangi who is believed to be in his late 60s, has carved out a distinguished legal career spanning over three decades.
He was trained in law at the University of Nairobi before proceeding to the Kenya School of Law, where he was admitted to the bar.

His early years in practice saw him specialize in constitutional and commercial law, steadily rising to become one of the country’s most respected litigators, particularly in politically sensitive cases.
Mwangi’s legal brilliance and discretion made him indispensable to Odinga.
Over the years, he became more than just a lawyer,he was a trusted adviser, often involved in high stakes political negotiations and legal battles that defined Odinga’s career.
Insiders say the late Odinga valued Mwangi’s ability to combine legal precision with political foresight, especially during moments of national crisis.

He played a behind the scenes but critical role in some of Kenya’s most consequential political settlements, including the 2008 post election power sharing deal between Odinga and the late Mwai Kibaki following the 2007–2008 Kenyan post-election crisis. Mwangi was also part of the legal and advisory circles that shaped Odinga’s famous 2018 handshake with Uhuru Kenyatta, an agreement that eased political tensions and redefined alliances.
In later years, he remained influential during Odinga’s evolving relationship with President William Ruto, offering counsel as the opposition leader navigated shifting political ground and eventual cooperation with the government.
Mwangi was known for his measured public statements, but in his final years, he made striking political observations about the internal dynamics of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
He has openly acknowledged that factional tensions within the party reflected what he described as a deliberate dual structure strategy under Odinga’s leadership.

According to Mwangi, ODM had long operated with both a political-diplomatic wing and a more militant faction, each serving a strategic purpose.
He has controversially claimed that the faction associated with ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna was part of Odinga’s calculated fallback plan, particularly during periods of political strain.
In Mwangi’s interpretation, the Sifuna-aligned group represented a contingency force one that could assert a harder political stance when negotiations faltered.
His remarks fueled debate within ODM, especially as internal disagreements became more visible.
Odinga, however, publicly defended Sifuna’s right to dissent, maintaining that ODM remains a democratic party where divergent views are tolerated and formal positions are determined through established party structures.
The response underscored the delicate balance Mwangi himself had described.
His colleagues and peers who talked to DNK-International describe Mwangi as a man of few words but deep conviction.
Among his memorable quotes is his assertion that “law and politics are twins, you cannot resolve one without understanding the other,” a philosophy that continue to define his career.
He has also famously remarked that “power is negotiated, not declared,” reflecting his belief in dialogue over confrontation.
While Mwangi has never actively sought elective office, his influence suggests that his influence and legal mind may continue shaping the politics of ODM party or either of its two wings (Linda Mwananchi or Linda ground group), possibly aligning with either the reformist or hardline factions he once described.
Mwangi’s life tells the story of a man who has operated largely out of the spotlight but stood at the crossroads of Kenya’s law and politics, quietly shaping decisions that defined an era.
