She was born on December 27, 1966 in Isiolo County and she made history as the first “girl” from the region to study up to form Six,an extraordinary achievement at a time when educational opportunities for girls in pastoralist communities were extremely limited.
Her academic journey laid a strong foundation for a distinguished career.
She holds a Bachelor of Education from Kenyatta University and a Master’s degree in Educational Administration and Planning from the University of Nairobi.
She began her professional life as a teacher and steadily rose through the ranks to become the Principal of Isiolo Girls High School, where she played a pivotal role in shaping the futures of many young women.
Tiya’s leadership abilities soon extended beyond the classroom into public service.

She has served in several high level positions, including as the Women Representative for Isiolo County in Parliament (TNA Party).
Tiya has also been a Commissioner at the Interim Independent Electoral Commission (IIEC) from May 2009 to November 2011, a member of the National Commission on Gender and Development, and a Commissioner at the Poverty Eradication Commission.
Currently, she serves as a Commissioner at the National Land Commission (NLC), one of Kenya’s constitutional commissions, where she contributes to the management and oversight of land resources,a critical sector in the country’s development.
Beyond her official duties as she told DNK-International,she is a passionate advocate for the empowerment of girls and women from marginalized communities.
She’s the founder of the Foundation for Kenyan Women Pastoralists, an organization dedicated to expanding educational opportunities.
