Traffic Officer Killed by Speeding  Truck at  a Roadblock along Kisumu–Busia Highway

A police officer was in the wee hours of today  killed after being knocked down by a speeding truck at a road block on Kisumu-Busia highway.

The truck driver allegedly defied a lawful roadblock along the  road.

According to police,the incident occurred at about 1.00am  at Asikote area in Luanda, Vihiga County.

The deceased officer,Constable Michaels Yeko Bittok, was attached to Embale Police Station and was on duty conducting a roadblock operation.

According to traffic police, the roadblock had been properly mounted with stop signs placed on both sides of the highway and was under the supervision of an officer of the rank of a Sergeant.

During the operation, a Mercedes Benz Actros truck, registration number KCW 622S, hauling trailer ZH 2419, approached from the Kisumu direction heading towards Busia.

The truck driver, identified as Farah Adan Esay was flagged down by the officer but allegedly ignored the signal, sped off and violently knocked him down.

He sustained severe injuries to the back and abdomen and died on the spot.

Police officers visited and marked the scene, which is set to be revisited during daytime for further analysis.

The body of the deceased was transferred to Coptic Hospital Mortuary for preservation pending a postmortem examination.

The motor vehicle involved was detained at Mulokhoro Police Post awaiting inspection, while the driver was arrested and placed in custody pending arraignment in court.

Today’s tragic incident has once again raised concerns over the safety of officers manning night roadblocks and reckless driving on major highways.
