Two peaceful but unusual awareness protests have unfolded in Olkalou town, Nyandarua County.
The two have drawn public attention to unemployment and mental health concerns, police have confirmed.
According to police,a 29 year old man identified as Jassan Mwangi Kimani,a resident of Munyoinne area in Wanjohi Location, Kipipiri began a tree hugging challenge just outside the police station.
Kimani told officers that his protest aims to highlight the growing problem of unemployment in the country, adding that he intends to sustain the challenge for 100 hours.
In a separate but related incident within Olkalou Central Business District, another man, Simon Waweru Chege, aged 36, from Kiganjo village in Kaimbaga Location, chained himself to a tree near the Total petrol station, about one kilometre west of the police station.
Chege said his action is meant to create awareness about mental health issues affecting residents of the county.
Police officers from Olkalou Police Station said that they are closely monitoring both demonstrations to ensure public safety and order.
They noted that the protests have so far remained peaceful, with a follow up report expected as the situation develops.
The twin acts according to analysts have sparked conversation among residents, reflecting rising public concern over unemployment and mental health challenges in Nyandarua and across the country.
