Two police officers were injured during a late night and today’s early morning operation to demolish illegal structures erected on a road reserve in Githurai, Kiambu County, authorities have confirmed.
The exercise, carried out by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), targeted structures encroachedv on the road reserve within the Githurai Mwiki area.
The operation commenced at 10:00 p.m. and concluded at 2:00 a.m. on February 19.
No civilian injuries were reported during the demolition.
However, prior to the exercise, a group of suspected goons barricaded the road in an attempt to disrupt the operation.
Officers from Githurai Mwiki Police Station responded promptly, dispersing the group and clearing the highway.
During the confrontation two officers sustained head injuries after being struck by stones.
Both officers were treated and later discharged in fair condition.
Police said officers remained on standby to ensure security and prevent further disturbances as the road was reopened to traffic.
