By Our Reporter,Mandera

Two Police Reservists have been killed and two others injured following a deadly Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attack along the Kenyaโ€“Somalia border in Mandera East.

The explosion occurred on Wednesday night at Border Point Four in Kulun, approximately 100 metres inside Kenyan territory.

They are reportedly to have been on active duty.

Security sources say the device had been planted on the ground at the exact point where the officers were guarding.

According to police reports, the attack is suspected to have been carried out by elements of the Somalia National Army (SNA), who man a position about 50 metres from the Kenyan border point.

Investigators believe the incident may be a retaliatory strike linked to an earlier cross-border clash in which SNA soldiers were reportedly killed.

The officers who lost their lives have been identified as NPR Corporal Mohammed Abdow Issack and PC NPR Abdirashid Shabellow Ali, both of whom succumbed to their injuries after the blast.

Two other officers survived the attack. PC NPR Athan Noor Abdullah Abdi sustained critical injuries to both lower limbs and is currently receiving treatment at Mandera Referral Hospital, while PC (R) Abdullahi Jillow Adan is reported to be in stable condition, suffering ear injuries caused by the explosion.

A multi agency security team comprising officers from the DCI, ATPU, BDU, APS command, border patrol units, and other fighting units swiftly moved to the scene.

Investigators recovered a destroyed mobile phone fitted with a Somalia SIM card, believed to be linked to the attackers.

The Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU) secured the area and safely detonated a secondary IED discovered at the scene, preventing further casualties.

Police confirmed that all firearms issued to the affected officers were accounted for.

Post mortem examinations were conducted on the deceased officers, after which their bodies were released to their families for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing, with the DCI Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) in Mandera taking over the case.

Security along the volatile border has since been heightened as residents and officers remain on alert.
