An undercover anti-drug operation in Bombolulu area in Nyali, Mombasa County, turned chaotic on Friday evening after members of the public attacked a group of police officers, leaving one officer seriously injured.

According to police reports from Kadzandani Police Station, the incident came to light after a clinical officer at Bomu Medical Clinic reported that a male patient had been brought to the facility with severe injuries.

The victim had sustained two deep cuts on the head and another on the right shoulder.

The injured man was later identified as a Corporal attached to the DCI in Kwale and residing at Mbaraki Police Depot.

After receiving first aid at the clinic, he was referred to Jocham Hospital for further treatment.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the officer had travelled from Bamburi to Bombolulu when he was confronted by about seven armed individuals near the Petrol City area.

The attackers, reportedly armed with pangas, allegedly shouted “mwizi, mwizi” before assaulting him and fleeing the scene.

Further inquiries by officers from Kadzandani Police Station and DCI Nyali established that the officer had been in the company of four other officers during an undercover mission targeting a suspected hard drugs den in the Bombolulu area.

Police said the officers were operating undercover but the operation had not been officially recorded.

The mission turned unsuccessful after members of the public reportedly pounced on them, forcing the officers to withdraw from the area.

During the confusion, the injured officer was cornered by the mob and subjected to mob injustice.

A female officer also sustained injuries on her left arm during the incident.

Police have launched investigations into the incident as they continue to pursue those responsible for the attack.
