Veteran Cleric Bishop J.B. Masinde: Four Decades of Faith, Leadership and National Influence

By Our Reporter,Nairobi

For more than 40 years, Bishop John Brown (J.B.) Masinde has remained a towering figure in Kenya’s Christian landscape, blending apostolic authority, pastoral care, and theological depth to shape generations of believers and leaders across the country and beyond.

Believed to be in his late 60’s or in his 70’s, Bishop Masinde’s journey into ministry began in the early 1980’s after undergoing formal theological training both locally and internationally.

He earned a Diploma in Bible and Theology from the International Bible Training College in Lagos, Nigeria, before advancing his studies at the East Africa School of Theology (EAST) in Nairobi, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Bible and Theology.

Years later, he deepened his ministerial expertise with a Doctor of Ministry degree from the European Theological Seminary in the United Kingdom, alongside honorary doctorates in Humanities from United Graduate College & Seminary in the United States.

Bishop Masinde was ordained into the ministry in 1984, the same year he founded Deliverance Church Umoja in Nairobi.

The renowned Bishop later on began what would grow into one of Kenya’s most influential Pentecostal congregations.

From a modest pioneering fellowship, the church has expanded into a thriving apostolic center with thousands of members and a far-reaching network that has contributed to church planting, discipleship, and leadership development across Kenya and internationally.

Known for his compelling teaching style, Bishop Masinde has earned a reputation as a seasoned Bible interpretor who simplifies complex scriptural truths into practical teachings.

A section of his congregants who talked to DNK-International said that his messages, often infused with humor and cultural insight, have resonated widely, making him a respected voice not only within Deliverance Church International (DCI) but also in broader Christian circles.

Within DCI, he serves as the General Secretary and sits on key governing bodies, including the Apostolic Council and the Deliverance Church Council.

In these roles, he plays a critical part in shaping doctrine, governance, and administrative direction while supporting the General Overseer in steering the movement’s vision.

His influence extends beyond the pulpit.

Bishop Masinde has been actively involved in national Christian institutions, having served on the boards of the Bible Society of Kenya, Life Ministry Kenya, and the Nairobi International School of Theology, now known as International Leadership University.

Through these platforms, he has contributed significantly to theological education and leadership formation in Kenya.

A firm believer in the transformative power of the Gospel, Bishop Masinde’s core message centers on discipleship, strong family values, and empowering believers to fulfill their divine purpose.

He is widely associated with the teaching that “a strong church is built on strong families,” a principle that has defined much of his ministry philosophy.

The veteran Bishop maintains a close working relationships with fellow clergy, government officials, and national leaders, positioning himself as a unifying spiritual voice in times of social and political discourse.

While not overtly partisan, Bishop Masinde has on various occasions engaged with state leaders, including President William Ruto, particularly on matters touching on moral values, national unity, and the role of the Church in governance.

Regionally and globally, his apostolic influence has been amplified through his affiliation with Salt and Light International Ministries in Oxford, United Kingdom, where he participates in mutual mentorship and apostolic covering.

This connection has further cemented his standing as a recognized voice within the global Christian community.

Beyond ministry, Bishop Masinde is a devoted family man.

He is married to Persiah Muthoni Masinde, and together they have raised five children, including Joy Brenda Mdivo, a prominent corporate leader serving as Chairperson of the Kenya Power Board of Management.

His family life is often cited as a model of balance between spiritual leadership and personal responsibility.

Colleagues and followers describe him as a consistent and steady leader whose legacy is defined not just by the churches he has built, but by the leaders he has mentored and the lives he has transformed.

As Kenya continues to navigate complex social and moral challenges, Bishop Masinde’s voice remains influential, anchored in decades of service, a commitment to sound doctrine, and a vision of a spiritually grounded and united nation.
