Residents of Vihiga County have expressed excitement and optimism following the announcement by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi that this year’s Labour Day celebrations, slated for May 1, will be held in the county.
Locals say the decision is historic, marking one of the rare occasions the national Labour Day event will be hosted outside the capital, Nairobi.
They view the move as a major boost to the county’s profile and a clear recognition of Vihiga’s growing importance on the national stage.
Traders and business owners, particularly those in the hospitality sector, have welcomed the news with enthusiasm, noting that the influx of visitors including senior government officials, workers’ representatives and guests from across the country is expected to significantly uplift local businesses.
Hoteliers, transport operators and small scale traders anticipate increased demand for accommodation, food, transport and other services during the celebrations.
Residents also believe the event will open up Vihiga County to further investment opportunities, improved infrastructure attention and long term economic benefits beyond the single-day celebrations.
As preparations begin, many in the county are hopeful that hosting Labour Day will not only be memorable but will also leave a lasting positive impact on livelihoods and local development.
