Waiswa Alex Mufumbiro:NUP party Deputy Spokesperson elected MP in Uganda while in detention

By Our Reporter,Kampala

As Ugandans wait for the official announcement of one of Africa and long serving President Yoweri President to continue holding office, the main opposition party in the country is celebrating the election of one of them while in detention.

Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, the National Unity Platform (NUP) deputy party spokesman, was declared the winner of the Nakawa East parliamentary seat while still in custody.

It cemented his status as one of the most symbolic political figures of the moment.

Mufumbiro, a close ally of NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine), was arrested in September 2025 outside a Kampala court in what the party described as a politically motivated move aimed at silencing outspoken opposition leaders.

Officials in Museveni’s government accused him of incitement and related offences stemming from political mobilization activities.

He denied all charges levelled against him when he was arraigned in court.

Since then, he has remained in remand, even as the country’s election campaign unfolded without him on the ground.

Despite his detention, NUP pressed ahead with his candidature, submitting nomination papers on his behalf and running a campaign driven by grassroots supporters, party officials and volunteers.

On election day, voters in Nakawa East delivered a stunning verdict, handing Mufumbiro victory and sending a powerful message that incarceration could not extinguish their political choice.

Mufumbiro is best known nationally as a seasoned mobiliser and articulate party communicator.

Before his election, he built his profile through years of political activism within NUP, eventually earning the trust of Bobi Wine and the party leadership, who appointed him deputy spokesperson for his consistency, loyalty and ability to connect with urban youth.

Those close to him say his entry into politics was inspired by what he often described as a desire to confront injustice, political exclusion and economic inequality, ideals he found reflected in Bobi Wine’s message of people power and generational change.

He has repeatedly expressed trust in Kyagulanyi’s leadership, citing shared experiences of state pressure and a common vision of democratic reform.

News of his victory sparked celebrations among supporters and renewed calls for his immediate release so he can take up his parliamentary duties.

Many hailed the outcome as not just a personal triumph but a collective protest vote against repression.

“This win is louder than any rally,” supporters said, describing it as proof that the electorate would not be intimidated.

Mufumbiro’s election places him among a rare group of politicians whose rise has been shaped as much by confinement as by campaigning.

As legal proceedings continue, his supporters insist his mandate is clear, to represent Nakawa East, push for political freedoms and amplify the voice of the opposition from Parliament.

From arrest to electoral victory, Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro’s story now stands as one of the most compelling chapters in Uganda’s contemporary political history,a reminder that, in Nakawa East, the ballot proved stronger than the bars.
