The Zimbabwean government on Wednesday handed over humanitarian aid to neighboring Mozambique following devastating floods in the southern African country.
Speaking at the handover ceremony in Harare, the country’s capital, Acting President Kembo Mohadi expressed sympathy and solidarity with the Mozambican government and people who have been affected by the floods.
“The loss of lives, destruction of homes, crops and livelihoods, and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of families, is a painful reminder of the growing vulnerability of our region to climate-induced disasters,” Mohadi said.
He said the tangible support from Zimbabwe, including humanitarian aid and air rescue helicopters to support search and rescue operations in the affected areas in Mozambique, signify Zimbabwe’s unwavering commitment to regional cooperation and humanitarian assistance.
Noting southern Africa’s increasing vulnerability to extreme weather conditions due to climate change, Mohadi called for strengthened preparedness, resilience and collective action.
“These floods are not an isolated occurrence. As southern Africa, we continue to face cyclones, floods, droughts, and heat waves that undermine food security, infrastructure and human development,” Mohadi said.
The acting president reaffirmed Zimbabwe’s commitment to strengthening regional disaster preparedness, early warning systems and climate resilience, while continuing to advocate collectively for greater international support as Africa confronts the impacts of climate change.
