The National Police Service (NPS) is celebrating the academic and professional milestone of Superintendent of Police Dr. Benard Kibet Yegon.

His journey from the lower ranks of the force to earning a PhD is being hailed as a model of excellence and transformation in policing.

Dr. Yegon, currently serving as Staff Officer in charge of Planning, Research and Reforms at the General Service Unit (GSU) Headquarters, has distinguished himself as a key driver of strategic programmes and policy development within the unit.

His work focuses on institutional planning, research coordination, modernization initiatives, and strengthening service delivery through evidence based approaches.

He joined the police service in July 2007 as a Police Constable and trained at the GSU Training School in Embakasi.

Over the years, he steadily rose through the ranks, serving in various roles including Instructor, Deputy Staff Officer for Public Relations, Staff Officer for Public Relations, and later transitioning to planning and research functions.

His promotion to Superintendent of Police (SP) in October 2024 capped more than 16 years of dedicated service.

Speaking during an interview, Dr. Yegon said his pursuit of higher education was inspired by the changing nature of policing.

“Modern policing requires knowledge, strategic thinking, and evidence based decision making.

Education equips officers with the analytical skills necessary to address complex security challenges,” he said.

Dr. Yegon holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Sociology and two Master’s degrees in Economics and Strategic and Security Studies from the University of Nairobi.

He later earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Public Policy and Administration from Kenyatta University, graduating in December 2025.

His doctoral research focused on governance, policy analysis, and public administration, with particular emphasis on security sector reforms.

Balancing demanding police duties with academic work posed significant challenges, including time constraints and operational pressures.

However, he credited discipline, proper planning, and support from colleagues and family for his success.

Dr. Yegon noted that his academic journey has enhanced his approach to policing by strengthening his analytical and strategic capabilities.

He emphasized the importance of research and data driven decision making in addressing emerging security threats, adding that policing today goes beyond enforcement to include governance and public service delivery.

Dr.Yegon has also encouraged fellow officers to pursue higher education, describing it as a critical pathway to professional growth and improved service delivery.

His achievement highlights the growing emphasis on education within the police service and reinforces the NPS commitment to professionalism, innovation, and excellence.
