For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs— 1 Timothy 6:10
Money itself isn’t evil; it is a neutral tool. The danger lies entirely in our affection for it. When wealth shifts from a resource we manage to a rescue we rely on, it becomes an idol that quietly displaces God from our hearts.
Paul warns that chasing wealth as our ultimate source of security or significance leads to a dangerous spiritual drift. The phrase “pierced themselves with many griefs” perfectly captures the irony of materialism: it promises freedom but delivers a cage of anxiety and discontent. It convinces us that just a little bit more will bring peace, yet that peace remains forever out of reach.
Take a moment to examine what anchors your security today. Are you trusting in the provision, or the Provider? Let’s check our roots and realign our hearts with the only wealth that lasts.
