Police in Bungoma have arrested two suspects believed to be part of a phone theft and hacking syndicate operating within Bungoma Township and its environs.
According to a report recorded at Bungoma Police Station yesterday evening, the arrests were made at about 3:30 p.m. during a joint operation involving officers from Bungoma Police Station, M-KOPA Kenya Limited officials, and officers from the Kenya Police Service Operations Headquarters.

The operation followed intelligence gathering and investigations into a series of reported mobile phone theft and hacking incidents within Bungoma Township.
Those arrested were identified as Gidion Were Onyango, 28, and Mark Thomas Nyasimi, 19.
Investigators believe the two were working alongside other suspects operating from Sang’alo and Bungoma Township.

Police said that multiple reports made at Bungoma Police Station since 2025 helped in tracking the suspects, culminating in their arrest.
During the operation, officers recovered 38 M-KOPA HMD phones suspected to be stolen, 53 assorted mobile phones also believed to be stolen, and five flashing tools allegedly used in phone hacking activities.
The suspects were placed in police custody pending further investigations as recovered items have been handed over for forensic examination by M-KOPA officials, with a report expected within two weeks.
Police indicated that the case remains under investigation as efforts continue to identify and apprehend other members of the suspected syndicate.
