A boda boda rider has been lynched and his body set ablaze by an angry mob in Luand,Vihiga County after he was accused of being linked to the theft of a motorcycle.
According to a police report, the incident occurred at Musitinyi area in Ebusundi Sub-location after officers from Luanda Police Station responded to information from local administration that a suspected motorcycle thief was being attacked by members of the public.
By the time police arrived at the scene, a large group of irate boda boda riders had already set the suspect on fire.
Preliminary investigations established that the deceased, identified as Desmond Etale Etanga, was allegedly linked to a three man gang suspected of stealing a motorcycle belonging to Renson Obando, a boda boda rider from Kima area.
Police said Obando had left his home riding his red Boxer 125 motorcycle, registration KMHA 554X, when he was ambushed about one kilometre away.
A woman is said to have struck him on the head with a blunt object as he slowed down at a corner, causing him to fall.
A male accomplice then took off with the motorcycle while the pair escaped.
The victim reportedly told investigators that he had seen Etanga together with the two assailants shortly before the attack, prompting fellow boda boda riders to trace him.
The mob cornered Etanga and subjected him to mob justice before setting him ablaze.
Police moved the body to Mbale Hospital Mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
A red Boxer motorcycle, registration KMGX 310G, believed to belong to the deceased, was recovered and detained at Luanda Police Station as investigations continue.
Police have launched investigations to trace the two suspects who escaped with the stolen motorcycle while also probing the mob killing.
