Four Special Operations Group (SOG) officers, including one Kenya Police Reservist (KPR), were killed on Tuesday morning after their patrol vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device (IED) in an ambush along the Alungu Main Supply Route in Lafey, Mandera County.
According to preliminary reports, the officers were travelling in a Land Cruiser when the explosion occurred, after which they came under attack in what is believed to have been a coordinated ambush by suspected Al-Shabaab militants.
Security sources indicate that the IED is suspected to have been planted on July 21, with the attackers allegedly waiting for a security patrol to trigger the device before launching the assault.
The incident underscores the persistent security threat posed by Al-Shabaab along the Kenya-Somalia border, where militants have repeatedly targeted security personnel using roadside bombs and ambush tactics.
Authorities are expected to issue an official statement as investigations into the attack continue and security operations are intensified in the area.
